{"id":21,"date":"2012-10-21T21:29:23","date_gmt":"2012-10-21T21:29:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/crobrun.com\/?p=21"},"modified":"2012-10-21T21:29:23","modified_gmt":"2012-10-21T21:29:23","slug":"friendship-and-politics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/crobrun.com\/?p=21","title":{"rendered":"FRIENDSHIP AND POLITICS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When I started this blog I made a decision not to write about politics or religion and I\u2019m not about to change that today;\u00a0 however, as I was checking my email, and reading the news on my IPAD this morning I read where someone had decided to unfriend someone on Face Book due to a political disagreement.\u00a0 In this hot political season where everyone seems to be much more polarized that I personally can ever remember, this isn\u2019t the first time I\u2019ve seen a friendship dissolved because of a disagreement over politics.\u00a0 \u00a0As a person who has friends from all walks of life, rich and poor, Black, White, Asian Muslim, Jew and yes, Democrats and Republicans, I find it hard to believe that I would ever lose a friend over something as idiotic as politics.\u00a0 First of all, if you have friends who don\u2019t respect you enough to understand that your views aren\u2019t always going to mirror theirs, what kind of friend is that?\u00a0 At least weekly my friends and I have arguments about some political subject and some of them are heated, but we never leave the conversation as anything other than friends who respect each other\u2019s right to his or her opinion.\u00a0 My dad used to say that everyone is entitled to his opinion, even if it\u2019s wrong which is what I usually say to my friends when I\u2019ve had enough of the argumentJ\u00a0 We basically decide to agree to disagree and let it go which when you think about it is just smart since in most cases we\u2019re never going to solve the issue anyway.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s stop here and take a look at the qualities defined by friendship:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Friendship<\/strong> is a relationship between two people who hold mutual affection for each other.\u00a0 <strong>The <a title=\"Value (personal and cultural)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Value_(personal_and_cultural)\">value<\/a> of friendship is often the result of friends consistently demonstrating the following:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The tendency to desire what is <a title=\"Altruism\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Altruism\">best for the other<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Sympathy\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sympathy\">Sympathy<\/a> and <a title=\"Empathy\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Empathy\">empathy<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong><a title=\"Honesty\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Honesty\">Honesty<\/a>, even in situations where it may be difficult for others to speak the <a title=\"Truth\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Truth\">truth<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Mutual <a title=\"Understanding\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Understanding\">understanding<\/a> and <a title=\"Compassion\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Compassion\">compassion<\/a>; ability to go to each other for emotional support<\/li>\n<li>Enjoyment of each other&#8217;s company<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Trust (social sciences)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Trust_(social_sciences)\">Trust<\/a> in one another<\/li>\n<li><strong>Positively strong, deep, close <a title=\"Reciprocity (social psychology)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Reciprocity_(social_psychology)\">reciprocity<\/a>, <a title=\"Mutuality\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mutuality\">mutuality<\/a> \u2014 equal give-and-take between the two parties<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The ability to be oneself, express one&#8217;s feelings and make mistakes without fear of judgment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If we believe in any or all of the basic tenants of friendship as defined above, how could any political argument cost us a friend?\u00a0 <strong>I know some people allow their political party designation to define who they are and who they associate with, but the truth is that\u2019s a very sad state for anyone to be in.<\/strong>\u00a0 When we close ourselves off to views of others, we also close our minds, and many times it fosters ignorance and sometimes just plain stupidity.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>No matter what your political party, we all should always remember that politicians will say anything to get into office and once there, they will say anything to stay there.\u00a0 A politician will do everything possible to keep the masses divided because that\u2019s how they hold onto power.\u00a0 If they can make you and I believe that where we live, our economic status or the color of our skin makes us so different that we can\u2019t possibly have anything in common, that\u2019s what they\u2019ll tell us because gaining and holding power is their only real concern.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Finally, I want to thank my friends for allowing me to be who I am, for respecting my views and knowing that I respect yours;
